H.O.P.E through Health and Nursing Philosophy

I believe that nursing is encompassing the humanistic side of caring for patients; altruism. So this is where my foundation encompasses the parallel of H.O.P.E through Health and Nursing. It is defined as “Holistic Opportunities Providing Empowerment” to the patient through selfless nursing. I value the ideals that a patient has the tools and the skills to heal themselves or are able to come to acceptance of their condition. This can only happen if they have the support and guidance to show them.

The nurse is not only an advocate, but a mentor and someone who inspires, not through false hope, but through clarifying and educating the patient. This empowerment helps provide the patient with proper support systems and skills to overcome the obstacles they may encounter. My beliefs and values have shaped the way I care, inspired from common ground where nursing began, Nightingale and Parse. These two nurses embraced holistic healing.

With advances in health care, the nursing scope of practice has gone to new level of caring, especially with all the technology offered. My enthusiasm to share with others is that, there exists the competency to still care in a holistic professional manner, but using the new changes to our advantage. My goals are to be a leader and to be the best nurse I can be, making sure I am allowing for the multidimensional being to co-exist during times of stress and dis-ease for the patient. I want to advance my skills when new educational opportunities arise, so I can in turn improve my empowerment skills to my patient(s).

Attributes I admire in a great nurse is one whom embraces change, has patience, dedication, is hardworking, compassionate and willing to help others when possible. With this in mind, I hope I can replicate and integrate this into my own nursing practice, which will undoubtedly grow in the future. As many know the only constant is change…, therefore I choose to embrace this, let’s have HOPE.
